The Biggest Lie Ever Told: A Seattle Town Hall Event

According to Washington State Department of Corrections’ data, more than 34% of Washington State prisoners suffer serious mental illness. The Post-Prison Education Program offers former prisoners access, support, and resources for achieving post-secondary education and reducing the risk of recidivism. Lauded author and mental health reform advocate Pete Earley, who joins us at Town Hall to address what the Post-Prison Education Program calls The Biggest Lie Ever Told—that recidivism is a mysterious and unsolvable problem. Earley invites us to a discussion of the ways the Post-Prison Education Program has successfully helped former prisoners integrate into society and reduce their risk of readmission into the prison system. Earley offers us insight on the ways we can support the education of former prisoners—as well as ways for us to work towards disentangling Washington’s prison and mental healthcare systems and stop criminalizing mental illness.
