Unpacking White Privilege in Schools and Classrooms

Unpacking White Privilege in Schools and Classrooms

Talks/Lectures, Conference, Education
Embedded in the attitudes of millions of white Americans, hidden biases such as White Privilege operate largely under the awareness of human consciousness and influence the way that we see and treat others. Blind to the realities of institutional structural racism, white allies are often ill-prepared and unable to effectively promote equality, champion justice, and address privilege within schools and classrooms. At this workshop, participants will explore how white privilege plays out in their lives by recognizing the various ways that white privilege has created inequality and inequity in our schools and classrooms. As the morning progresses, participants will seek ways white allies can work together to reform systems and engage in culturally responsive practices with young children. In the afternoon, participants will focus on providing equitable learning environments that take into account the impact of a student’s background. Ensuring each student is visible, valued and validated, attendees will discover ways to create a positive classroom learning community to serve the diverse needs of their diverse students. With sessions focused on how white privilege operates both at the institutional level, as well as its direct impact on the classroom, participants will have the opportunity for large and small group conversations and develop practical strategies to address white privilege in schools and classrooms.
