Marlene's is a great place to go for a healthy snack, some vitamins, or maybe some patchouli oil. I've never been blown away by their deli, though it is good. The pasta salads and lasagna are nice, but not the best. The smoothies are great. It is nice that there is a microwave in the dining area in case you want to heat up something you've purchased to eat there, and they have a set-up with utensils and napkins for dine-in convenience.
I prefer going to less expensive places for produce and other groceries, and long for the day when Tacoma has a food co-op. Honestly, I can't afford to shop here for most stuff, but I still like it. It's one of the few truly vegetarian-friendly places around.
One of my two favorite restaurants in Tacoma (the other being Gateway to India). The East & West Cafe serves delicious "southeast Asian cuisine" cooked with FRESH! ingredients, and all done very well.
The Thai iced tea is delicious to start with. Their grilled tofu sate with peanut sauce is yummy (I've heard the meaty varieties are amazing as well). My favorite of the entrees I've tried is the pad see yeu. It is filled with lightly cooked fresh broccoli and carrots over wide noodles, and again, with the grilled tofu, YUM!
Everything here tastes fresh and good, not greasy and heavy, and not like it's just been thawed. I never have complaints about the service. The atmosphere is always nice. It's great to be able to eat outside in the summer. I also love that aside from this location in South Tacoma, there is a smaller one in the Proctor District with the same great service, food, and atmosphere.
Give this place a try. I can hardly stand eating Asian foods anywhere else since eating here.
I swear they put something addictive in this food to make you crave it all the time. Or maybe it's just delicious. Probably that.
There are occasional order mix-ups, or they might forget to bring your lassi, but oh, the food! I adore the naan, especially dipped in the soup they bring before the entree, and their malai kofta is a huge favorite of mine. Their chai is also delicious.
The staff is very friendly, and they never make me feel rushed. It's a very nice place to hang out and dine with some friends, and it's quiet, if you're into that.
