TNT RESTAURANT CRITIC ED MURRIETA SAYS
Mexican fusion cuisine (and an impressive tequila list) served in a vibrant dining room and moody bar accented with Day of the Dead imagery. A new chef and some menu changes since reviewed in 2007.

Food issues

Their menu sounds high end, but the food is not prepared high end. I ordered the grilled skirt steak, scallops and prawns and instead of rice asked for seasonal vegetables. The skirt steak was all fat, maybe one bite of actual meat, the scallops were overcooked (easy to do if you’re not paying attention) but the prawns were all right. The "seasonal vegetables" were over cooked onions and green peppers drowning in oil. The atmosphere is nice but the food doesn’t match – I won’t be back.

Service Issues

Both times I visited Masa, service was an issue. The first one was most likely attributed to the startup period. The server was overwhelmed, and the temporary menus were mispelled. The second visit, there was absolutely no excuse. While our server was pleasant, we dealt with the hostess for an hour and half while waiting for the tables we had reserved weeks in advance. She was rude and blatantly lied. She said they were getting the tables ready, when in actuality, they were just waiting for enough diners to leave! By the time we were seated and were getting our food, the restaurant was nearly empty. Her excuse was they were not accustomed to handling large parties. However the same week I received a coupon mailer with a discount offered to large parties at Masa. Unbelievable. The food wasn't great either. The only thing worth visiting Masa for is the colorful mural.
