From Ruins to Renaissance: The Architecture of Downtown Tacoma

Monday, Dec 21 (2009) 12:00p to 5:00p
Age Suitability: None Specified

This exhibit looks specifically at the architecture of downtown Tacoma. It illustrates the socioeconomic, political and natural forces that led to Downtown Tacoma’s buildup and influenced its downward phases, endeavoring to explain why Tacoma fell into a deep downturn in the second half of the twentieth century.

It tells the inspiring story of the gradual restoration of the City of Destiny’s historic business district, and of the people – leaders in business, community activism and government – who brought it back to life, beginning in the 80s, through the nineties and the current decade – a period which some have termed Tacoma’s “Renaissance.
