Parsing Race revolves around the breakup of a white ex-Marine officer, John Furman, with his African-American girlfriend Yolanda because of racial misunderstandings. The breakup is hastened by Yolanda’s father Walter who doesn’t believe interracial relationships can work. During the course of the play, we meet a number of other characters—including a black wannabe “gangster” named Saleem and his heretofore unknown white grandmother—who portray various elements of America’s racial tapestry.
