Wayne Hancock

Country, Rock, Swing, Americana/Roots, Blues
Wayne "The Train" Hancock has found success with his mix of Texas country, rock and rockabilly, which looks to the past while still sounding new. He is often compared to Hank Williams III. Writing songs since the age of 12 helped him win a talent contest at age 18 called 'Wrangler County Showdown.' He then was immediately shipped to new recruit training for the US Marine Corps where he served four years. "The Train" was chugging along with his musical career when he recorded his 2003 album, 'Swing Time,' live during a two-night stand at the Continental Club in Austin.

William Tyler

Pop, Experimental (Incl. All Music Forms), Folk
Nashville born and bred William Tyler's 2010 album 'Behold The Spirit' contained "a mesmerizing blend" of Appalachian drone and ambient noise alongside acoustic and electric guitar work that caused Pitchfork to declare it "arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more." Some may know Tyler from his playing in Lambchop, the Silver Jews, Wooden Wand and with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. 'Impossible Truth' (on Merge Records) "carries Tyler's hallmark finger-picking style into beautiful sublimated pop territory, a '70s singer-songwriter album sans lyrics, that's informed by ecology, apocalypse and meditation."

Weyes Blood

Electronic, Pop
Weyes Blood is the project of Natalie Mering. Influenced by her parents' born-again Christianity – not entirely in a good way – and by the idea of sacred spaces, she and her band made an album, 2016's “Front Row Seat to Earth.” That fall, Mering told an interviewer at Southern California's KPCC, "When I record, I think about sacred space and I think about what would be the sound of your soul if there is music coming out of it. It would probably be an echoey, strange chamber."

The Lemonheads

Rock, Alternative
The Lemonheads' evolution from post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk rockers to teenage heartthrobs is one of the strangest sagas in alternative music. Initially, the group was a punk-pop trio formed by three teenage Boston suburbanites, but over the years, the band became a vehicle for Evan Dando. Blessed with good looks and a warm, sweet voice, Dando became a teen idol in the early '90s, when Nirvana's success made alternative bands commercially viable. While his simple, catchy songs were instantly accessible, they tended to hide the more subversive nature of his lyrics, as well as his gift for offbeat covers and his devotion to country-rock father Gram Parsons.

Folk, Country, Americana/Roots, Pop
The Texas singer-songwriter, who was born in Maine, has a compelling raspy tenor that suits his folk-pop-country tunes. Cleaves the songwriter is a man of his generation (He's in his early 50s.) and of the times, with an ear for the lyrical possibilities of plain-spoken English as well as the memorable phrase. Both qualities can be heard on his 2000 album, "Broke Down." He released another in 2013, "Still Fighting the War," and again in 2017, "Ghost on the Car Radio."

Ivan & Alyosha

Rock, Pop, Indie
There’s a scene in Dostoevsky’s 'The Brothers Karamazov' where the main characters Ivan and Alyosha discuss the existence of God. Ivan, in particular, questions the idea of God. Alyosha, on the other hand, is a monk, a believer, some may say a holy fool. Talk of faith and exalted things is rare in indie rock today. Enter Seattle band Ivan & Alyosha. Throughout their second release, the five-song 'Fathers Be Kind' EP, the members of this band chart their own course between divinity and disbelief. The name Ivan & Alyosha is apt for a band cutting its teeth. As Ivan in 'Brothers Karamazov' moves through the novel with doubts, Ivan & Alyosha navigate the indie rock world contemplating their path as a band. Tim says he writes songs about what’s current in his life. He recently married and had a son. Songs like 'Living for Someone' and 'Fathers Be Kind' reflect Ivan & Alyosha grappling with the idea of being in a band and trying to fashion a career. Despite the uncertainty, Ivan & Alyosha’s soulful folk tunes suggest a band inspired, hopeful and longing; a band unafraid to probe their collective faith and doubts.
