Music by Kurt Weill Book & Lyrics by Bertolt Brecht. The Threepenny Opera is a biting satire which chronicles the crimes of the notorious bandit and womanizer, Macheath.
Opening Capital Playhouse’s 2008-09 Season in a Box with a milestone in 20th century musical theatre, audiences will be spellbound by Bertolt Brecht’s and Kurt Weil’s The Threepenny Opera, running October 9 – November 1. The recent Broadway revival staring Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper brought new life to this social satire, and Capital Playhouse’s treatment will visually mix modern, Victorian and 1920s styles. The story, inspired by The Beggars Opera, brings a leather-bound, back-ally cabaret dripping in torn fishnet feel, and is a deliciously dark show that will echo the ambiance of last season’s ever-popular Sweeney Todd.
