Grit City Think&Drink | Take These Blues Away: A Sing-Talk Presentation from two Scholars of the South

In the era of Trump, it may seem all is lost, but we have been through worse before and come out smiling. Nicole Blair and Michael Honey talk and sing freedom and blues songs of the South that tell the truth of our blighted racist and sexist history, and that also give people courage to resist. Songs and stories help us to remember where we have been, and to take our blues away through persistence, humor, and collective action. Nicole Blair, a UWT literature and writing professor, is a scholar and singer with a deep appreciation of the American South. She recently published Virginia Woolf and the Power of Story: A Literary Darwinist Reading of Six Novels, and is currently writing about the blues women of the South. Nicole has recorded 2 CDs of original Americana music and currently finishing her 3rd. She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Blues Studies from Delta State University. Michael Honey, a founding faculty of UWT, teaches African-American, labor history and oral history. He has published a series of acclaimed histories of southern labor, civil rights, and Martin Luther King, Jr. He is a collector and singer of songs based on his years of organizing in the South and work with Pete Seeger and other singers of the folk.
