Grit City Think & Drink: Listening to the Vital Signs of the Planet

Listening to the Vital Signs of the Planet: New Approaches in Climate Data Communication with Judy Twedt, Climate Data Sound Artist, UW Seattle. Judy Twedt designed a new Ph.D. program in climate data sonification to explore novel techniques for translating geophysical data into sounds that help us better understand our planet, and how it is changing. In this presentation, she will reveal the what, how, and why of data sonification — and perform original soundtracks. Judy Twedt is a climate data sound artist and doctoral candidate at the University of Washington. Born and raised in Tacoma, she graduated from Stadium High School and attended Tacoma Community College along the way to a PhD program at the University of Washington. She is a recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the UW College of the Environment Award for Environmental Leadership, and the Husky 100 Award. Her soundtracks have been aired on radio stations including KUOW and NPR and she is a speaker for TedX Seattle.
